The 2020 UPPAbaby Knox Car Seat is UPPAbaby's first convertible car seat and it is, by no surprise, inspired by UPPAbaby's long-running tradition of well-designed, highly functional and stylish baby gear. With the Knox car seat, UPPAbaby has thought through all of the critical details starting first and foremost with safety. Read on for a thorough review of this product, including colors, features, options and specifications.
Features of the UPPAbaby Knox Car Seat:
Energy Response Technology. The Knox car seat is made with an Energy Response Technology that provides for unparalleled side impact protection among marketplace car seats. This technology includes:
- Active response headrest which utilizes absorption and recovery properties of foam including EPP to deliver protection to the head and neck that grows with child.
- Side impact pods on side of the shell spread forces in the event of a side impact crash
- Impact dispersion zone utilizes EPP throughout the seat as well as being strategically placed between the inner and outer shell of the car seat, to ensure crash forces are absorbed into the seat rather than the child.
- Koroyd technology, integrated into the base, crumples instantly and consistently on impact to absorb force and reduce acceleration
SMARTSecure™ Installation. The UPPAbaby Knox is designed with UPPAbaby's SMARTSecure™ System, with visual green and red indicators used to determine if the car seat is installed properly. This built-in installation feature minimizes errors and takes the guessing game out of your installation. This feature has safety indicators for proper car seat installation, helping to achieve a safer and more confident installation.
Multi-Directional Tether for Added Safety. The Knox has a multi-directional tether that routes from the back of the seat in either direction and attaches to the anchor mechanism built in the back of your car's seat. This is a fairly unique safety feature that sets the Knox apart from many other convertible car seats. In the event of an accident, this built-in tether will keep the car seat more secure and balanced, significantly reducing risk of impact to baby's head and neck.
Rear-facing to Forward-facing. The Knox is a rear-facing to forward-facing car seat and it may be used in rear-facing mode from 14 to 40 lbs., and in forward-facing mode from 25 to 65 lbs. As you might have heard or read, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends keeping your child's car seat in rear facing mode as long as possible within the car seat manufacturer guidelines. With a 40 lb. limit in rear-facing mode, most children can use the KNOX past their second birthday!
Optional Infant Insert. The Knox car seat will later include an optional infant insert accessory (this item is not yet available and will be released at a later date by UPPAbaby). With this insert, the car seat may be used for a newborn child. Otherwise, the car seat may be used from 14 lbs. and upwards, which we expect will be the most common use for this seat anyways. Remember that convertible car seats may not be docked onto a stroller, therefore, most families that use this or another convertible car seat usually start that use around Baby's one year mark, making the use of the infant insert less common.
EPP combined with Memory Foam. The UPPAbaby Knox has EPP (expanded polypropylene) strategically placed not only in the head support of the car seat, but also in the sides of the car seat, for safe and effective side impact protection throughout the car seat. UPPAbaby has constructed this car seat with EPP, which creates less environmental impact and is also significantly more recyclable than other similar materials. EPP is a durable material used in a variety of safety products, including motorcycle helmets and similar types of safety goods.
Grows with Child. The car seat's head rest is built with 9 adjustable height positions and easily moves upward or downward, continuing to provide support and protection for the child's head as the child grows and becomes taller. With this car seat, you avoid the hassle of "re-threading the harness" which entails removing the seat's fabric and re-threading the harness through the new slots. With the UPPAbaby Knox, you can simply click the button at the top of the head rest, allowing you to adjust the height for both the head rest as well as the harness positions to the desired higher or lower position.
Multi-Recline Positioning. The Knox has multiple recline positions built into the car seat in both forward-facing and backward-facing mode. Simple pull the recline positioner in the back of the seat to select the desired position for baby, from upward to most reclined, and install at the desired position.
Side Impact Protection (SIP). The Knox is built with "passive" side impact protection which means it requires no action by the parent or child's caretaker to activate, it's always there!
Seat Belt Installation with Combined Latch Plate & Lock-off Seat Belt Routing. The Knox uses a unique seat belt routing mechanism that combines one part of the seat belt routed through its built-in latch plate, and another layer of the seat belt routed through its lock-off mechanism. This helps parents avoid confusion related to the two seat belt layers during installation, and assists in achieving a tight, safe installation.
Includes Cup Holder The convenient cup holder may be installed on either side of the car seat, for baby's bottle of juice or milk. You may also remove the cup holder, take it inside the house for a quick clean before returning this handy accessory back to its home base on the car seat.
Narrower Design. This car seat is also smartly designed to be slightly narrower than other car seats to help growing families accommodate multiple car seats in the car at the same time.
Optional Latch Connectors. UPPAbaby's recommendation is to install the car seat by seat belt, hence the built-in lock-off and latch plate in the inner wall of the car seat. As a secondary option, the car seat includes LATCH connectors for parents who'd like to install the seat using your car seat's LATCH system. LATCH is built in to newer cars, typically made after 2002. The Seat Belt mechanism without latch is more common, and accommodates more car makes and models.
Fashion Options. The Knox car seat is made in four stylish colors including as a fun teal color. Regardless of the color you select, the Knox has a classy, understated style that will beautifully complement your car interior. The four fashion options that the car seat is available in are:
- JAKE: classic darker UPPAbaby color combination in Black Mélange
- BRYCE: combination of subtle White and Grey Marl tones, a great option if you're looking for a lighter car seat!
- LUCCA: a beautiful deep Teal Mélange in contrasting tones
- JORDAN: a combination of Charcoal Mélange with sporty Citron accents, more on this color just below!
Naturally Fire Resistant Fabric Option. The Jordan color of the Knox car seat is uniquely made with a wool fabric, which is naturally fire resistant. As a result, UPPAbaby has not incorporated additional Fire Retardant (FR) chemicals into the fabric of the Jordan color.
